Fix these gardening mistakes today

Whether it's the time of the day to water your plants or looking for ways to get rid of pests effectively, there are plenty of questions amateur gardeners are often burdened with. Whether you're planting flowers, perennials, shrubs, or trees, there's always something new to learn in the garden. An overzealous pruning session often leaves a shrub looking sad and skimpy. Fortunately, Mother Nature is forgiving, your garden will rebound in no time, and making mistakes is a part of the learning process!

With that being said, let's look into some of the common gardening errors that one can recognize and resolve in their plants,

Not planting flowers to attract pollinators

Plants need pollination to be able to produce fruits and seeds. While some of them are self-pollinated, most of the edible ones, namely, apples, tomatoes, squash, watermelon, need bees, flies, wasps, and butterflies to carry pollen from plant to plant.

Fix: You can ease the job of these winged workers to find your vegetable garden by planting a variety of pollinator-friendly plants in your space.

Putting plants in the wrong spot

That gorgeous shade-loving plant might look perfect by your front door, but it won't last long if that area gets full sun. The same applies to sun-lovers in the shade, they won't bloom or thrive.

Fix: "Right plant, right place" is a popular saying among plant nerds. Read the label or description before purchasing the plant and it's best to have an appropriate spot in mind before bringing the plant home. For further clarity, full sun means 6+ hours of sunlight, part sun means about 2-3 hours of the same, and full shade means no direct sun.

Yellowing of leaves

Yellowing of leaves, or in scientific terms, chlorosis, is an indication that the plant is in some kind of stress. The cause of this ranges from underwatering, overwatering to not getting sufficient light.

Fix: The easiest fix to this is touching the soil with your finger before watering it. Personally, this trick works like magic as it removes hassles associated with keeping a time-tracker for watering. If the soil sticks to your finger, it doesn't require watering.

Chlorosis can also occur in plants due to a lack of nutrition.

Fix: Adding compost once every 30 days is a great hack. Also mixing 20 ml of seaweed solution in 2 liters of water and adding it to the soil contributes to the plant health to a great extent.

The seaweed solution that I've found most useful is,

Murdering House Plants

Most house plants are killed by kindness. Too much generosity with water is the number one killer. You should never let your plants sit in water continually.

Fix: The easiest fix to this is touching the soil with your finger before watering it. If the soil sticks to your finger, it doesn't require watering. Also exposing your indoor plants to direct sunlight once every 15 days serves as a great hack to avoid wilting and yellowing of leaves.

Aphid infestations and Mealybugs

Aphids are small insects that feed on the leaves and stems of plants. Mealybugs are more harmful to your plants as they attract ant infestations.

Fix: The only way of combating these creatures is using, what I call, the Magic Soap Solution. Add 3-4 ml of shampoo, 7-8 ml of neem oil, and mix it well with water. Spray this solution on every corner of the plant. This method is very effective in removing both aphids and mealybugs.

Note: Use the soap solution only during the evening. Spraying it during the daytime may disrupt the normal functioning of the plant. Also, make sure to wash the solution off your plants by the next morning at the earliest.

Stunted Growth

It often happens that you suddenly observe a lack in growth in your plants and limped, drooping leaves. These are signs of stunted growth in plants, which might occur due to scarcity of resources negatively affecting the plant's growth or any infection in them.

Fix: Pruning a few parts of the plant not only boosts growth but also helps them in utilizing the nutrients in an effective way. Summers are the best time to prune your plants.
